Feng Shui
"Article from WOFS.com written by SKY"
The Flower Horn or Hua Luo Han has been touted as the feng shui fish for the coming period of 8 (beginning in 2004), just as the arowana had been dubbed the feng shui fish for the present period of 7 (which began in 1984). It is said to bring its owner lots of prosperity luck and good fortune in everything ranging from wealth and fame to love and happiness.
Developed through selective crossbreeding in 1996, the popularity of the Flower Horn has been gaining momentum by the day. The origins of this hybrid fish can be traced from the Cichlid family, which is classified under the genus of Cichlasoma.
The Kua or trigram for the period of 8 is Ken, which among other things, symbolizes the mountain and the earth element. The Flower Horn's most important distinguishing feature its nuchal hump, which protrudes from its forehead- is said to simulate the mountain. This fleshy hump combined with its muscular bulk contributes to its overall squarish profile, which solidly reflects the earth element
The current feng shui cycle is the Period of 7, which is governed by the Kua or trigram of Tui symbolizing Metal. The graceful arowana, with its body shaped like the blade of a sword and its pearly sheen, attests to the metallic attributes of the trigram.
Another distinctive trait of the Flower Horn would be its black coloured side markings, which develop as the fish matures. These side markings are said to resemble lucky numbers or Chinese calligraphy or even Arabic wordings. Well-developed adult fish with exceptional markings could well sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Some Flower Horn have reddish pink side markings that are heart-shaped; these are said to bring excellent luck in love.
Currently the most popular fish among fish hobbyists and aquarium specialists, the Flower Horn or Hua Luo Han should be displayed prominently in public areas of your home or office to invite prosperity and good luck into your lives.

Origin of Flower Horns

Flower Horns originated in Malaysia between 1994-1996. There are many different theories of what was originally cross bred to create the
original flower horns. Most seem to agree that it was a result of cross breeding a South American Cichlid and other types of cichlids.
Nevertheless, through selective and very precise cross experimentation, we have the beautiful creatures that we see today. Though there are adversaries of the cross breeding origins of the flower horns, it gained popularity with many enthusiast by it's attractive color and unique characteristics. Mythical beliefs further fuel the craze on that the Asian culture also tout the flower horn to bring it's owners good luck and prosperity. Today the craze is ever popular in
South East Asia, and is quickly growing throughout the world!

Different Breeds

English name / Chinese name

Flower Horn / Luo Han
Golden Flower / Jin Kang or Ching Kang (JK)
Golden Monkey / Hou Wang (GM)
Pearl Flower Horn / Zen Zhou Luo Han (ZZ)
Kamfa / Jin Hua, or Kim hoa (KF)

Thousands of varities then split off from these main families, with crossovers happening here and there. The most consistent and beautiful breeds then get named by the breeder. ie living legend, pickachu etc. The whole craze started w/ the flower horns, then they came up w/ a consistent strain of Pearl Flower Horns. Broader body, larger head, flowers are more distinguishable w/ a metallic outline. Through the same process of cross breeding, you get the newest generation, Kamfa(KF). Many varieties are starting to come up w/ Rainbow King and Pickachu leading the way in popularity. They have a shorter mouth, a more
rounded dorsal fin, and is known for a late developer, but is very beautiful when mature. Prices then, go w/ the market trend.
SE Asia is not too crazed about
Flower Horns or ZZ, but now Kamfa is the name of the game. Prices for KF are extremely high there! Here in the
US, the market is still trying to get to know Flower Horns in general. Kamfa has not caught on here yet, but it will soon. As for now the prices of quality ZZs at lfs are high yes, but that's because that's what's in right now here in CA. The fact that Flower horns do not exist in the wild means that if there aren't any breeders that continue to breed Ultimate Warrior lets say,...they disappear for good. Most breeders who are trying to keep up in the race to be first, can't afford to keep around varieties that is considered "out of style" and won't make them any $. [Top]
